Wish you all a Happy Women's Day full of honour and respect for Women all over the world. In Indian tradition, we have always regarded any pristine and immaculate aspect of this creation as "Mother" for example, Mother India, Mother Earth, Mother Nature....
Today in our society, both rural and urban, we need to bring in this sense of respect for women. That can only happen through education. And education starts at home.
The most damaging substance to Women's safety, security and honour, is alcohol. 90% of the crimes against women have happened under the influence of alcohol. Also most of the domestic violence occurs under the influence of alcohol. Bangalore for example has one of the maximum number of liquor shops. Nowadays, there are big alcohol stores, like departmental stores, only for alcohol. Alcohol drains a family financially, morally and mentally. When I return from my office, I often pass through many liquor shops on my way, and sometimes in any of the traffic signals, when I am waiting for the signal in my two-wheeler, I observe the liquor shops. You know what I see, the majority of the customers are laborers or workers, who are returning after their daily work, and they pay 40-50 rupees for the alcohol, which they gulp in 2 seconds, and get going. It is estimated that poor people spend around 60% of their earnings on alcohol. So they will definitely remain poor. And their wives have to suffer the consequences in the form of domestic violence and poverty. For the rich, alcohol has the same consequences. Whether one consumes scotch or country liquor, the effect of alcohol on the nervous system is the same.
I believe, when we are walking on the streets, or traveling by bus etc., we (the Men) should have an awareness and responsibility that wherever we are we would not allow any kind of derogatory events to happen to any women within our vicinity. And if each and every one of us acts like this, there can be a big difference.
So three things, education, awareness and personal responsibility, and prohibition of alcohol can make a big difference. That's what I feel....
What do you say.....
